Daily journal May 29, 2001, Howard's Hearse, Memorial Day protest in Washington. DC.

The second day after a full breakfast at Mentone Springs Bed and Breakfast we returned to the cliff's edge to the beautiful home of Larry and Jane to see their marvelous creative and visionary art collection. I love this old hotel and although it had a central bath for each floor, I was the only one on my wing. I admired the W.D. Emerson piano and the harp in the huge dinning room and a poached egg breakfast among the great tapestry and to sit on the huge front porch in a rocking chair and swing in the old fashion swing. This is the oldest hotel in Alabama built in the 1800’s. Their rates are $45.00 about half of the going rate up here, an old fashioned wash bowl and pitcher on a stand is very good to see. After this we had lunch together in greater Summerville. I then return to the Finster Fest at his Paradise Park and the crowds were huge. I met so many people I know of Artists that were showing their work here. The weather had improved and the people seem to be buying freely, although some Artist were unhappy with their sales. Very soon then again the black hearse took Howard out with its many heads of women with long hair shaking and a siren sounding, but not looking like Howard’s artwork. This way a man could lay down and let someone drive him home or wherever. I am very happy to be here although my scooter drown out from all the rain. The power the beast has over people is awesome. Lamentations 3-3 “Surely against me He is turned; He turneth His hand against me all the day. 4-My flesh and my skin has He made old; He hath broken my bones. 5-He hath builded against me, and compassed me with gall and travel. 6-He hath set me in dark places, as they that be dead of old. 7-He hath hedged me about that I cannot get out: He hath made my chain heavy”. This speaks of the captivity of Israel as a lost nation. This would represent America today. Dear Lord, bring us out and restore us to our true place. PBS radio reported 5 million muslins in the USA and more Buddhist than Presbyterians here with Christians as 180 million or about half the nation. I know that there are 24% Catholic here and it is unfair and deceptive to mix protestant in the count. Still protestant Christian faith is well less that half of the American population today. I now head due North by the battleground and on to Bea’s Restaurant for a family style Carousel at Rossville, Tn. at 49^th st. and Dodds for the best boiled potatoes and slaw with house dressing, they push the meats but the vegetables are better. Then on it is the Chattanooga Choo Choo Holiday End Hotel lobby only for a pit stop and phone home. They have hotel rooms in old rail cars. This is an area of real intense police protection. Now on I-24, I drive toward Nashville past Covenant Trucking to see their great growth. I arrived at the mountain top at Monteagle, Tennessee for a nights stay. The urge to write my daily journal has become more powerful than to paint art, these 2 forces now compete within me. I begin tonight to paint Howard Finster while he is on my mind as preaching.
